The Illusion of Easy Money for Startups - Crowdfunding Beyond the Crowd
Isn't this the easiest way to raise funds for your business?
Hi Beamer,
In 2021 alone, 85% of small businesses experienced financial difficulties, making business loans, credit cards, and lines of credit a solution that accounted for about three-quarters of financing for new firms. However, the truth is that obtaining a loan involves a rigorous process. For startups hesitant to seek loans, crowdfunding emerges as a compelling alternative, offering a viable option for raising capital.
Nevertheless, while crowdfunding platforms provide a structured framework for campaigns, their success often depends on the startup's ability to drive traffic to their pages. Relying solely on these platforms can limit your campaign's reach, potentially hindering its success. In fact, according to The Crowdfunding Center, the average success rate of crowdfunding campaigns is just 22.4%. So, why not leverage your own community instead?
Confused?
As the saying goes, charity begins at home, and so should your startup funding!
Understandably, asking for a loan from friends and family can be a delicate matter, as money has a unique way of complicating relationships. That's precisely why crowdfunding presents an opportunity to rally your community around your new venture. Your friends and family members can become your initial backers, providing the seed funding needed to kick-start your venture. After all, they already know you, trust you, and believe in your potential.
Now, let's explore how you can make the most of this simplified form of crowdfunding within your community. Allow me to share a few insights:
1. Paint a vivid picture of your startup’s mission, impact, and problem-solution fit to your community: Your friends and family may not be familiar with your industry, market, or product. You need to explain to them what your startup does, why it matters, and how it solves a real problem. Emphasize the personal connection you have with your venture, making it relatable and inspiring. Articulate your vision, business plan, and funding requirements clearly and concisely. This will help potential supporters understand the scope of your project and the impact of their contribution.
2. Demonstrate Dedication: Share your journey, including the challenges and triumphs with your support community. Let your friends and family witness your dedication and passion. Transparency builds trust and encourages support - online tools like PayPal, Venmo, or GoFundMe can be ideal to collect and manage funds efficiently.
3. Offer them unique rewards: In exchange for their contributions, provide meaningful and personal incentives. Think beyond monetary returns and consider exclusive access, personalized experiences, or heartfelt acknowledgments, regardless of the amount pledged. Make your backers feel special and appreciated. Additionally, they can provide valuable feedback, advice, and connections to further enhance your startup journey.
4. Leverage your networks: Don't limit your outreach to just close circles. Encourage your friends and family to share your campaign with their own networks. Expand the reach of your crowdfunding efforts, tapping into the extended community that surrounds you. You never know who might be interested in your idea, or who might have useful contacts or resources for you. Word-of-mouth is a powerful way to spread the word and attract more backers.
So, what’s next Beamer?
Go do it!
Crowdfunding from your friends and family is not a new or novel idea. It is one of the oldest and most common ways to fund a startup. Many successful entrepreneurs, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, started their ventures with the help of their friends and family. You can do the same, if you do it right.
